Since it's inception, one of the key points critics of the Clean Power Plan has advanced is that it will threaten grid reliability and drive price increases for consumers.

Last November, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation said the Clean Power Plan asked generators to switch to a radically different generation mix without allowing them the necessary time to assess the impact it would have on grid reliability. They charged that several regions were already experiencing diminishing reserve margins because of the Plan.

But a study from the Advanced Energy Economy Institute found those concerns were overblown. The Institute said that new natural gas infrastructure, more manageable renewables and each state's ability to customize its plans for its own circumstances make the new guidelines feasible without threatening grid reliability.
