FERC bumps up natural gas scheduling curfew [Video]

As the U.S. reliance on natural gas for electricity generation continues to grow, FERC recently approved a handful of measures to make the purchasing and transportation of the resource more efficient for everyone involved.

The biggest change was applied to the time of day transmission organizations can schedule natural gas delivery. While 11:30 a.m. Central Time used to be the deadline, pipeline operators can now hold off until 1 p.m. The hour-and-a-half difference allows these companies to anticipate shifts in demand, leading to more accurate delivery and pricing.

However, FERC struck down its previous proposal of raising the official start of the gas day from 9 a.m. to 4 a.m., an issue some critics say could further benefit the natural gas industry price reporting if adopted.
