California utilities are urging lawmakers to open up their future generation mandates to include things they may have forgotten.

According to a new bill bouncing around state senate, the California Public Utilities Commission may require energy providers to draw as much as half of their total annual capacity from a specific set of renewable sources. As of right now, these utilities already have to meet a yearly benchmark of one-third.

However, residential rooftop solar installations apparently did not make the cut for these eligible renewables. California homeowners have added more than two-hundred megawatts to the grid in just the first quarter of 2015. Utilities argue adding residential solar would help them meet the distributed energy mandates without denying the technology its just reward.
