Maine took drastic measures to avoid investing a significant amount of money into the state's energy transmission infrastructure. Boothbay is now the home of New England's first utility-scale energy storage system.

The three megawatt-hour battery bank will allow Maine to control its overstressed transmission system and advance its renewable energy initiatives while steering clear of the costs to survey and build new power lines. The storage could power one hundred homes all day long or deliver five hundred kilowatts to the grid to offset six hours of increased demand, yet fits comfortably into three standard industrial shipping containers.

Though lawmakers have not released information regarding the project's cost, updating transmission lines would have been five times as expensive according to the organization that built the storage facility.
