Exelon sends nuclear power plant to 2016 MISO auction [Video]

After much debate, Illinois energy provider Exelon has decided to sell off its Clinton nuclear reactor. The power plant will be up for grabs at the 2016-2017 Midcontinent Independent System Operator capacity auction.

Energy experts cited Clinton as the least profitable of Exelon's nuclear power facilities in Illinois. Moreover, with the influx of inexpensive and alternative energy resources like wind energy flooding state markets, Clinton simply couldn't compete.

However, the uncertainty of Clinton's future could mean trouble for Illinois's attempts to reach Clean Power Plan benchmarks. If the Obama administration and the Environmental Protections Agency eventually decide to count nuclear power as a legitimate method for cutting carbon emissions, retiring Clinton could kinder efforts toward compliance.
