The quicker we make renewables a formidable contributor to the U.S. energy grid, the better, for our sake and the environment's. To that end, the American energy portfolio saw serious growth in renewable capacity last year, according to a report by SNL Financial.

Out of the fourteen and a half megawatts of new generation capacity added to the grid in 2015, sixty-one percent came from renewable energy installations. Wind energy comprised nearly half all by its lonesome.

That said, it's worth noting new capacity creation has slowed in recent years, but for all the right reasons. Experts speculate the need for extra capacity has decreased thanks in part to large-scale efficiency measures from generators across the country.
